appearance. Zak has dark blue eyes that almost look grey. Long blonde hair floats down her back, causing problems when trying to get it all under her helmet for riding. Zak has both ears double pierced with two cartilage piercings in her right ear. She has no tattoos yet but has sketches of ones she wants as soon as she can get over her abhorrence of needles long enough to get them. Her teeth are nice and straight courtesy of braces and a retainer that she still wears to sleep in. However, her teeth have always been slightly yellow due to a fever she had when she was a toddler. She's tried all sorts of whitening products with no results. She's not really happy about it but she's learned to accept them as a quirk since they're not going away. While she's a small person, Zak really wishes that she had more muscle mass. She also wishes that she had a taller frame like all the amazing equitation riders that she looks up to so much.

personality. Zak is generally a quiet person. She gets along with almost anyone though. On the other hand, sometimes she has a bit of a short fuse. She has very few close friends. However, if you are one of her close friends, she's an extremely bubbly person. Zak loves to laugh and will do almost anything to make someone else do the same. Zak can be extremely flirtatious when she wants to be even though she has almost no gaydar, meaning she hits on a lot of unappreciative straight girls. She's made it a rule that she never hits on a girl she rides with unless she's absolutely certain they're not totally straight - let's just say that hasn't happened yet. Zak is always the more femme girl in a relationship. She loves when her date opens the door for her and tries to insist on paying the whole bill for their meal, ticket, whatever may have been purchased for both on that date. Zak isn't a very prude-ish girl. She will go all the way on the first date if it feels right to her. However, she has pretty high standards and that's only happened once with a girl she had known since kindergarten.

history. Zakari Mindy Cross hails from the bustling city of Foxfire, North Carolina, population: 846 or so. What? You've never heard of it? Well, that's no surprise. Zak is the oldest of three girls but the second oldest child. Only her brother is her senior.
When Zak was seven, her father managed to purchase an old golf course just outside of Foxfire. Tons of work and 21 months later, the Cross family was opening Foxfire Resort and Golf. Her family made out well after that point and by the time Zak was 11, her mother had become a stay-at-home-mom for the six person family. While her sisters had always been able to do their chosen sports - dance - because there was a local studio, Zak and her brother had always wanted to learn how to ride. Until then, all the duo could do was pour through books on horses and riding, anything they could get their hands on really. The country club was soon making tons of money each year and the family could have had absolutely anything that they wanted but they kept living in the same small house in the middle of town with their neighbors too close and yard too small. They didn't drive fancy cars and they didn't show boat their money. They tried to stay completely true to their small town roots.
The final most important thing to Zak is the fact that she came out to her parents when she was 13 and the only response from her parents came from her mother. The words that slipped through her lips were, "I'm not really sure that concerns me, Zak." Her entire family is supportive of her homosexuality and don't mind meeting her girlfriends. However, coming from a small town and being openly gay wasn't always easy. Her girlfriends didn't want to be public about their relationship and often that was what ended up tearing their relationship up to the point of splitting up. Zak was bullied at school until her brother beat the snot out of a guy the day he found out that it was happening. See, kids are sneaky. If they don't want someone to know something that's going on, they keep that person from finding out. Matt only found out because he just happened to walk by as it was happening and he flipped shit. Granted, he got O.S.S. for a whole week, but the act made Zak and her brother even closer.
riding history. Zak wasn't able to start riding until she was 11. She and her brother started riding with a local hunters trainer in the same lesson. She progressed quickly through the lowest levels and began showing at rated shows. She didn't win every show but she did win some of them. Soon, she was winning more and more and moving up through the lower levels. She has most recently been riding at the A-level in intermediate classes and winning about half and half. She also owns four horses with her brother but none of them are coming to Rowanoak with her.

sample. The girl looked around her as she headed into the busy shopping district of the Upper East Side of Manhatten. The day ahead of her was sure to be quite fun. Well, it would be if she was a normal girl that liked shopping. But nothing about Ruby Johnson was normal. She didn’t belong in this city. She veiwed it almost as a living hell. The life she lived was a forced one. Her parents were on the board of all the museums and important institutes in the city and as rich as anyone could possibly be. She could spend as much money on whatever she wanted, could drink as much alcohol as she wanted, have sex as often as she wanted, and use drugs as she pleased as long as she kept her grades up. But the thing was, even with a life of so much luxury, she felt trapped. Everyone expected the elite of Manhatten to be perfect. She would be the first to admit that she was nowhere near perfect. Her life also felt completely planned out and that stressed her. She needed to apply to colleges soon, and getting into all the Ivies is expected and not getting in would be a total disgrace to her family. But she didn’t want to go to college next year. She wasn’t sure that she wanted to go at all, ever. But she knew that not going would never be an option. Instead of finishing her shopping, she found a taxi and directed them to take her to the bridge on and off of Manhatten. She hated her life and wanted nothing to do with it. As the taxi stopped, she paid him and then got prepared to do what she had been thinking about doing for years. She climbed up on the side of the railing and was about to jump over when the words “Don’t jump, Ruby. You’ll make me jump right in after you,” came floating in a familiar voice from behind her. She whirled around quickly, almost too quickly, losing her balance just slightly. She gripped onto the railing tightly. “What are you doing here? Did you follow me?” The voice had come from her brother and her best friend. His hand was extended towards her. She looked at him with a slight bit of contempt in her eyes as he nodded in response to her demand. What did he know? It was her life so why couldn’t she choose when it ended and not have a zillion people trying to stop her. But then she made the mistake of looking into his eyes. She could see the hurt in them from her not telling him what was wrong, could see the love in them from being her brother. Her face changed into a look of recognition with a small mixture of fear. She reached for his hand and got off the railing. As she stepped off she lost her balance, barely escaping the fate she had wanted just minutes ago. She pulled her brother close into a hug. “Thank you,” she whispered. She had thought no one in her family cared what happened to her. She had forgot about her brother. He has been away at college and it had seemed like he had forgotten all about her. Obviously she had been wrong, but she didn’t care about that. She was just glad that he hadn’t forgotten her like the rest of their pathetic and self-absorbed family.
